Abhilash Balakrishnan completed his undergraduate medical studies at the University of Singapore in 1975 and in 1983, he obtained his FRCS (Edinburgh) specialist degree in Otolaryngology. During 1990, he completed a year’s clinical fellowship in Paediatric Otolaryngology at the renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London. He then returned to Singapore as the country’s first trained Paediatric Otolaryngologist. He was appointed Foundation Head of the Department of Otolaryngology at the KK Women's and Children’s Hospital (KKH) from 1997 to 2006. He is currently a Senior Consultant at the Department of Otolaryngology at both Singapore General Hospital and KKH. He is also both an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Duke-NUS Medical School Singapore and a Clinical Associate Professor with the National University of Singapore.
As a senior clinician, he has been appointed to various expert committees contributing to the development of Otolaryngology in Singapore. He is currently the Chairman and Chief Examiner, JCST Exit Exam Committee in Otolaryngology and a Member of the Residency Advisory Committee (Otolaryngology), Ministry of Health, Singapore.
He has published and lectured extensively in the field of Paediatric Otolaryngology and continue to be invited to local, regional and international meetings.
Since 2010, he has developed a second career in Medical Education and actively participates in teaching health professionals at all levels. He was a Harvard Macy Scholar from 2011-2013.
In June 2015, he was conferred the degree of Master of Science in Health Professional Education (MS-HPEd) by the MGH Institute of Health professions, Boston, USA.
