DR ATUL SHAH Consultant Plastic Surgery Department Nanavati Super Specialty Hospitals Mumbai, India
Born in 1949 at Jetpur, Gujarat, India, Dr Atul Shah completed his MS (General Surgery) in 1976 and MS (Plastic Surgery) in 1978 from Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. Dr Atul Shah is attached to the Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital as Consultant Plastic Surgeon since 1990. He has been a recognized Mumbai University teacher as Honorary Professor of Plastic Surgery at Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai. In 1985, he was awarded MNAMS from National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in recognition of his valuable research contribution to advancement of plastic surgery and medical sciences.
He has also served as the World Bank’s Consultant to Government of India and World Health Organization’s Short-Term Consultant to Myanmar. Dr Shah has been Visiting Consultant to Mexico, Tanzania and Sri Lanka on behalf of Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development. Dr Shah has often been invited as Visiting Professor to deliver lectures on plastic surgery and leprosy at various places in the UK, Netherlands, Norway, Nepal, USA, China, Philippines, Indonesia etc.
He is the recipient of ALIMCO award, Golden Peacock award for innovative products and services and Reader’s Digest Gold Award for Corporate Social Responsibility on behalf of Novartis India Limited. Indian Association of Leprologists conferred on him “Lifetime Achievement Award”. Dr Shah received most prestigious International Gandhi Award 2017 for his humanitarian work in upliftment of leprosy patients with reconstruction and rehabilitation. He is the first Plastic Surgeon to receive this honour from Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation.
The comprehensive program on prevention of blindness in leprosy has seen him carrying out research and designing simple surgical procedures for Lagophthalmos in Facial Palsy.
