Billy Martin has a wide range of clinical and research interests spanning the fields of physics, hearing, neuroscience and population health. His training in the University of California system included audiology, speech science, linguistics, electrical engineering, medicine, neuroscience and computational physics. This was followed by a post doctoral fellowship at the Technion-Technical Institute of Israel in auditory neurophysiology.
From 1997 to 2013 Billy was a multi-program director in the Oregon Health & Science University Oregon Hearing Research Center where he oversaw the OHSU Tinnitus Clinic, tinnitus research, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and the Dangerous Decibels international noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus prevention program with materials now in 41 countries.
He is currently professor of Otolaryngology at the National University of Singapore where he directs the M.Sc. graduate training program in Audiology and continues as co-director of Dangerous Decibels. He is also a principal audiologist and tinnitus specialist at the National University Hospital. Billy has authored or co-authored has over 750 scientific publications and/or presentations across his fields of interest.
Presently, his research projects examine community based hearing loss and tinnitus prevention in Native American/Alaska Native children, hearing health promotion in Southeast Asia/Pacific Islands, hearing evaluation technology and the medical economics of hearing loss. In his free time he is an avid surfer and coaches the NUS men’s and women’s water polo teams.
